Winter Fashion Must-do’s! | 80s Revival

Put down the Uggs! This winter we are experiencing a resurgence of 80s power glam. Do not go digging in the back of your wardrobe. Instead, to stay ahead of the style game this season—you should be looking in your mother’s closet! Here are some of the hottest trends to stay on top of as we approach Canada’s coolest season.

Channel your inner boss, because boss babe suits are back in a big way. Forget the office, these suits are made for the streets. Who will you be? The boss lady strutting in an unforgettable Pantone colour, or will you rock the London look in tweeds and plaids? Step out of your comfort zone and reach for a DayGlo orange or ultra violet, the colour of the year.

Budgeting for just one look? Close the deal with the hot pink, skinny two-piece by the Canadian brand, Kara Louise Collection. The collection, personally designed by this year’s Miss Globe herself (Louise is a pageant champion as well as a designer and entrepreneur) uses fabric that stretches to fit, with silk lining. Add a statement necklace and go braless under her low-cut blazer for a daring look and all eyes will be on you.

Don’t stop there; cover yourself in head-to-toe leather this shivery season. The leather skirt is the must-have, so get in on this trend before the weather turns. Come winter, squeeze into some form-fitting leather leggings. Want head-turning celeb status? Go for Namesake’s “Hellbound” ultra-skinny leather pants and the “Detta” skirt from Mackage.

A northern staple—and a must-have —is a leather jacket. This year, make it an over-the-top badass leather jacket; let Gene Simmons from KISS be your inspiration. Choose colour over black, and make the details count: studs, grommets, paint splatters and fur. Toronto’s own Namesake does embellished fur on leather best.

When the temperature starts dropping, be on the lookout for cougars. This season is full of animal prints, from high end to low, so dare to take a walk on the wild side. If you’re looking for luxury, go for the Roberto Cavalli full-length zebra gown found at North42. Don’t want to commit to a large investment but still want to look red hot? Click on the “Amanda” bandage dress from Velvet Ave.

Winter loves fur, but the real thing… not so much. Sustainability was a major trend on most recent runways so when it comes to keeping warm, “faux” is the way to go. Go big, bold and guilt-free with your fuzzy outerwear this year because the trendsetters will be oversized. For that “oh so extra” statement piece at an affordable price, look no further than Michael Kors or Mendocino.

No longer just for necks and wrists, 80s-style silk scarves have been spotted on purses, belts and even in your hair. Not brave enough for the neons this year? Stop by Aldo accessories and pick up a neckerchief—an easy and affordable way to achieve that pop of colour!

Some trends from the 80s can definitely stay there—here’s looking at you leg warmers. But you can acid wash my denim and scrunchie up my hair any day, baby! Be as bold and bright as summer this winter and make like Marty Mcfly—go back to the future for style.
