I am a firm believer that every gal (or guy) should have at least one red lipstick in their makeup bag. Whether you’re completing a bold evening look or just focusing on your lips, red lipstick is sexy, sassy, classic and screams “Look at me!” Since it stands out so much, you want to be sure that you’re choosing the right colour for your skin tone. Any given cosmetics line can offer dozens of red shades, so here are some things to keep in mind to help you choose a shade to compliment your complexion.
Alabaster Lipstick Shade
For our fair-skinned friends, cool, bright reds are best. Look for shades with blue undertones. Bonus: Blue undertones will make your teeth appear whiter. Yay!
Those with pink undertones in their complexion will want to look for deeper berry-reds to provide a beautiful contrast.
Medium Red Shade
If you have medium, olive-toned skin, look for warmer tones in orange-based reds. You may find that the lipstick you’ve chosen pulls too much orange and you can mix it with a blue-based red to help neutralize it slightly. Say your complexion is more mocha-toned, plum reds are a great choice.
Those with darker complexions should opt for warm red formulas with high colour payoff (think opaque). Anything too sheer or with the wrong undertone may appear chalky upon application. Muted or earthy brown-based reds also work beautifully.
No matter what your complexion or colour preference, it is essential to try the lipstick on first. Since you may not always be in the mood to try it on your lips (or you’re a total germaphobe like me), test the lipstick on the pad of your pinky finger (where your fingerprint is) as opposed to the back of your hand. This area most closely resembles the tone and texture of your lips and will give you a better sense of how it will look when applied to the lips.
Remember, these tips are meant to be guidelines and are not set in stone – always make sure you have fun with your makeup look. If you find one classic red that you adore, pick up a few lip liners in a variety of tones to create custom shades for yourself.
