Feng Shui Tips and Techniques

Improve your well-being at home with tips and techniques from this ancient art.

Feng Shui is the practice of arranging your environment so that energy or ‘Chi’ flows gently Through your home.
Feng Shui helps make your space feel good and can support what you want out of life, whether it is a better career, new romance or better health. The New Year is a great time to consider incorporating basic Feng Shui principles to start moving your life and health in the right direction.

According to Feng Shui, certain parts of your homecorrespond to key areas of your life. By working with the energy of each centre, you can enhance your life by using specific objects that will encourage its Chi (energy) to become activated.

Your home is divided into a grid consisting of three-by-three squares called ‘bagua.’ The bagua are wealth, fame, marriage, family, children, knowledge, career and travel. The health bagua sits at the centre of the grid and affects all other areas of your life because it’s the only bagua that touches all the others.

The health bagua is the most important area since it represents your physical, psychological and spiritual health. We all know that good health is what allows us to nourish and cultivate relationships, enjoy travel and create wealth. With that in mind, Feng Shui for your health is one of the first steps to consider when looking to apply these ancient remedies.

To create a strong Feng Shui foundation for a healthy home, you should start with the Feng Shui health basics.

1.Breathing in good quality air is important in Feng Shui. Working with air-purifying plants, opening windows often or using essential oils to clear the air is a priority for health and well-being.

2. Remove clutter. Clutter in your home is essentially clutter in your mind and body. Regularly clearing clutter and unwanted items is important or the clutter will constantly drain you of your energy.

3. Natural Light. Allow your home to receive as much natural light as possible. Adding indoor lighting to areas that are not as bright and to rooms that are not frequently used helps to keep the energy alive and moving. Light gives us nutrition that we can convert to energy so using light or colour (which is also a form of light) to encourage the flow of Chi is another effective tool for Feng Shui health bagua.

Those are easy remedies that you can incorporate
any time to improve your health. Once you havethem in place, you can start applying more specific Feng Shui cures. Each bagua is associated with a specific element and colour. The element for health is Earth, so adding a plant with lush green leaves or objects that are green or brown in colour will encourage Feng Shui health energy.

There is a powerful connection between three Feng Shui areas in your home. The Feng Shui trinity of your bedroom, bathroom and kitchen should be considered when evaluating your home because your health is strongly affected by them.

When I think of my bedroom, I feel a sense of calm and tranquility. This room is where we spend one-third of our lives so it should nourish and replenish your energy. There are a couple of things to consider in a bedroom. The bed should be the biggest piece of furniture and should be placed up against a solid wall and anchored by a night table on either side. Placing a rug below the bed will ground the energy as long as you are not storing things underneath. This will create stagnant chi and will drain your energy as well.

Feng Shui teaches us that sometimes using your own intuition is a great way to keep energy moving throughout your dwelling. I suggest considering how each room in your house makes you feel. Does it feel relaxing, fresh and bright? Do you constantly feel the need to move pieces of furniture around? Or are you always trying to add accent pieces to a particular room? These questions will help you decide whether Feng Shui remedies are needed.

The art and science behind Feng Shui is 4,000 years old, so understanding it fully requires more information than what I have to say in a few paragraphs. A proper audit is needed when you want to fully vitalize the energy of your home, but using my tips and tricks is a fun and effective way to change your vibe and improve your health.
