If you’re thinking about getting mom jewellery or flowers for Mother’s Day—save your money for a family vacation! A recent survey shows 92% of mom’s prefer experiences to presents, especially with their lives being so busy these days. So what better gift to give mom than the gift of a stress-free family vacation?
In light of this, Sunwing has enlisted a few of Canada’s busiest moms to share their tips for travelling with kids– a concept that doesn’t always equal a stress-free travel experience if you’ve ever vacationed with little ones in tow.
Here are some tips and tricks to have all you need to make your next family vacation a (tropical) breeze!
1. Pick an all-inclusive resort: Martine and Jonathan Bernier
In the past we’ve taken Tyler to resorts that didn’t offer all-inclusive packages and it’s been a bit more challenging. At all-inclusive resorts, it’s a lot simpler as there are so many choices – if he doesn’t like a dish at the restaurant, we can easily get another one. Ice cream is also included, which is great!
Martine and Jonathan Bernier, a professional hockey player for the Detroit Red Wings, are parents to son Tyler (4) and are currently expecting their second child. Martine and Jonathan Bernier enjoyed one of their first all-inclusive vacations with Tyler at Royalton Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic with Sunwing in 2016.
2. Keep the kids entertained: Melissa Grelo
I pack A LOT of activities to keep Marquesa entertained throughout the trip including her favourite colouring books and crayons, educational and entertainment apps and lots of snacks and water. I also download her favourite shows and movies to my iPad.
Melissa Grelo is to co-host and moderator of hit Canadian talk show, The Social, in addition to being a contributing host on CTV’s Your Morning and the founder of children’s clothing line marQ. She’s mom to daughter Marquesa (4). Melissa often takes her daughter with her on TV assignment. The family accompanied her to Planet Hollywood Costa Rica in November 2018. She also recently travelled to the Caribbean island of Bonaire on vacation with her family.
3. Get the lay of the land: Tracy Moore
After arriving at the resort and unpacking, our family always likes to go explore the various pools and restaurants to get the lay of the land. That way you won’t feel completely lost and when you make a meeting spot, you’re all on the same page and know where they’re located! Tracy Moore is the host of Canada’s longest-running lifestyle show, Cityline, and a mom of two young children – Sidney (10) and Eva (8).
Tracy and her family recently returned to Royalton Riviera Cancun in Mexico last month for a spring vacation. The couple renewed their vows there in 2017.
4. Always be prepared: Cheryl Hickey
Make sure to pack extra t-shirts and bottoms because kids tend to spill on themselves on the plane – even well-behaved kids. Trust me, it’s better to pack them than to forget them! Once Nyla had to wear a long-sleeved shirt as harem-style pants off the plane. Lesson learned!
Cheryl Hickey is the host of Canada’s popular entertainment program, ET Canada and is mom to kids Jaxson (9) and Nyla (5). Cheryl and her family recently visited Atlantis in the Bahamas and Royalton Bavaro in Punta Cana.
5. Make new memories together: Jennifer Valentyne
Be adventurous and try new things both on and off the resort. And, don’t forget to take lots of photos so you can look back at memories that will last a lifetime. That’s something I’ve always encouraged with my children especially as they get older!
Jennifer Valentyne is the host of Global News Morning Toronto and a mother of two teens— Jackson (18) and Georgia (17).
6. Have head to toe fun: Jessi Cruickshank
Once you get to your vacation destination, I say take full advantage of the opportunity to dress your kids in adorable vacation clothes! These are the memories you’ll cherish and the photos that you’ll look back on for years to come, so why not go all out with, say, matching Hawaiian shirts? And if you’re feeling extra festive, throw one on yourself too!
Jessi Cruickshank is the mom of two identical young twin toddler boys Diego and Rio. She is known for getting real about what motherhood is really like on socialmedia and is getting a lot of attention for her newly launched Facebook Watch show NEW MOM, WHO DIS?
