Moving into an apartment can be daunting. There are so many restrictions and guidelines when renting, it can be difficult to make the space your own. Having recently moved into my first apartment, I discovered some basic concepts that made the pro-cess go smoothly. Here are the three key things to keep in mind when designing your first apartment!
Before you make any serious changes to your space, make sure everything is clean and in its proper place. Having clutter is never cute! Begin implementing any storage ideas you have and don’t be afraid to get creative. Keeping clutter out of sight will not only make your space look better, but will reduce chaos and stress in your personal life.
When you’re in a small space, working with what you have is key! Working upward, rather than outward can give you the best use of every square inch. This vertical two-tier laundry hamper from Neat Freak has two collapsible laundry hampers supplied with EVERFRESH probiotic technology, which
reduces and controls odour naturally (1). It also can be tucked away between dressers or in small corners in your space.
Bonus: By working upward, you double your storage capacity and make your space appear bigger!
No that you’ve cleaned your place, it’s time to make it your own. Unfortunately, apartments tend to be a little bland, especially when you have renovation restrictions from renting. Often times, ripping up flooring and repainting aren’t options, but don’t let this discourage you. There are so many great alternatives!
When moving into my apartment, the thing that was furthest from my ideal space was the bright orangey-yellow parquet flooring my apartment came with. Rather than accepting my flooring fate, I laid down glue-less vinyl flooring on top of my previous floors. Yes, I said GLUE-LESS. Spend a day laying down the flooring and watch your space transform before your eyes. If you don’t have the budget for new flooring, opt for a large carpet that covers as much dull flooring as you like.
I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but your home is your sanctuary. When you come home after a long day of work, there’s nothing better than relaxing in your personal space that you have designed for you! Load up on soft blankets, beautiful smelling candles and fluffy pillows for your tranquil space.
To tie everything together, I believe every home needs that ultimate piece that can take your space from drab to fab. For me, that was this beautiful Sophia Media Console Electric Fireplace from Dimplex. Nothing gives homey vibes like a beautiful, cozy fireplace. Adding a fireplace can transform your apartment from an impersonal rental space to your own relaxing home. This fireplace from Dimplex doubles as a media console for my TV, and provides extra storage space on the sides!
Moving into a new space doesn’t have to be stressful. Use this opportunity to revamp your life and create a space you’ll always love… or at least for as long as you plan on renting!
