The Best Hair Trends For The Fall: New Season Means A New You

Fall ushers in change like no other season. In the salon, it’s when we are most likely to hear: “I want to do something completely different.” Perhaps it’s the latent urge for a “back to school” haircut. Regardless of your motivation, here are the season’s hottest looks: some are simple, some dramatic, perhaps one is the perfect change for you.

The Fall Fab 5: The Season’s Best New Hair Trends

Fall Fab

I usually steer my clients away from a full fringe during the summer, when hot temperatures make it more comfortable to keep your hair off your face—which also helps avoid breakouts. But with the cooler days and nights creeping in, fall is the perfect time to try out a new fringe! Forget blunt or wispy; this season is about a dramatic, chunky bang—heavy but with texture and movement. This look isn’t just for the girls! This fall, fringes are huge for men as well, and you’ll be seeing even more this winter.

The Bowl Cut. Use Demi Moore from Ghost for inspiration.

The New Bowl Cut

Feeling really brave? Morph that full texture fringe into this season’s hottest look: the bowl cut! Not your 90s boy band bowl cut; think of an updated version of Demi Moore’s do in Ghost. Haider Ackermann, Versace and Alexander Wang all featured models with this look at their 2017 Fall/Winter shows, and it’s my absolute favourite look this season! Full of texture, this new age bowl cut is feminine, whimsical and sexy; and it opens up a world of opportunity for colour! Try it with a faded nape or an undercut for a more dramatic look.

Speaking of colour, one of the easiest ways to transform your look is to take your grown-out ombré to a sexy, warm, chocolate “brombré” (a brunette/dark ombré). Selena Gomez is the queen of this colour and she has worn this look with both her shorter and long hair. The brown tones can be cool or warm to suit your preference. It will be a great change and, as a bonus, offers super conditioning for those dried out summer ends.

What would Blair Waldorf do? Headbands of course!

Hair jewelry is the one hair trend that continues to dominate the runway. This fall, it’s no different with serious statement headbands placed boldly across models’ heads on the catwalks at Chanel, Elie Saab, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana. Yes, headbands! These are not the cute, colourful plastic ones from your childhood—although I would NOT be opposed to those coming back! These are full, decorative headpieces: some with chains, some with pearls and all of them more part of the outfit than mere accessory. Regardless of the shape or size, I am all about the return of the headband!

Pulled tight pony is a great style for fall.

Pulled Tight Pony

We’ve seen different versions of the ponytail trending all year, and, for fall, the look is tight, smooth and low. Seen in countless collections over the Fall/Winter 2017 shows, this strong look is simple but powerful. Tory Burch tied hers back with a black velvet ribbon and Balmain featured braids, but across the board they were all smooth and tied tight at the nape. Alexander McQueen, Loewe and Jason Wu all featured the clean, low ponytail as well. This simple, elegant look is perfect for attending an autumn wedding—just amp up the makeup and jewelry to create more impact.
